User Research

User research played a central role in this scenario, as we needed to thoroughly comprehend why freelancers didn't log their expenses incrementally instead of waiting until the month's end for a mass upload. Was it a time constraint? Was it intentional or simply due to laziness? Our objective was to uncover the "why" so we could introduce the most effective solutions to their processes.

In order to achieve this, we monitored existing users through their Google reviews to identify and connect with them. Using this approach, we were able to interview four quality users and collect their feedbacks to understand their issues regarding the website.

A majority of the responses focused on the cumbersome nature of scanning receipts with a phone, completing various forms, and then uploading them to a computer. This often led to procrastination due to the laborious process. In many cases, the primary explanation was simply forgetfulness.

To address these usability challenges, we implemented 3 new features, focusing on enhancing user experience and boosting conversion rates for mobile users. The redesign featured streamlined navigation, a refined visual hierarchy, and mobile optimization.

Consequently, the updated design saw a notable improvement in usability and conversion rates, allowing users to create a web app by simply adding a bookmark to their phone's desktop. Users could access information more effortlessly, without constantly switching devices.

We integrated an OCR that exports receipt information via photo scanning, eliminating the need for manual entry – a significant time-saver.

Lastly, we considered gathering additional information during onboarding to assist users in organizing and receiving reminders for their uploads through in-app and email notifications.
